The Temple Run

I hope that all of you in my neck of the woods got to enjoy the beautiful weather we had today! It was 63 degrees! Considering it was just snowing a few days ago....So, McCall and I went on what we call "The Temple Run"(Have you guys ever played that game on your phone? It's pretty fun! Luckily we don't have goblins chasing after us on our temple run...hhehe)

WOD :
2 miles flat
1 mile uphill
1 mile downhill
2 miles flat

6-miles total

After a nice and easy 2 miles, we then run up this long, gradual, looks like it should be easy but it's not, hill.

(There's little McCall.)
At the top of the mile long hill is this beautiful temple.  Everytime I run this run, I can't  help but think how it can kind of relate to life.  We will have lots of steep hills that we will come across in our lives, that we may feel we can never reach the top of. But if we never give up and endure to the end, we will reach our goal of being with Heavenly Father again and to be with our families eternally. (which I would compare to the temple) It's the hard things we have to go through to get to the good things.   If we keep God in our lives, he will help us to overcome our trials (hills). If we can just keep going, he will help us and bless us.

Gosh, it sure feels good when we hit that corner by the temple. McCall and I both struggled getting up it, but once we made it to the corner and could take a breather,  we both felt so good and made it all the way to the end of our run without stopping. That was the farthest McCall has ever run! I was so proud of her!!

So how is training for everyone?? Any good stories or things you love about your runs?

Halloweekend Workout

My Instagram feed was full of people dressed up in all sorts of crazy costumes and going to fun parties this Halloweekend!

This is McCall and I's weekend party...

WOD:
We worked out in the indoor track at BYU-Idaho...

*Ran 1 mile timed (5 laps around the track)

 * 50 lunges, 100 yards running backwards, 100 yards side to shuffle runs. Repeated 4X

*2 stair laps in the auditorium

After, we did abs. Thanks to pinterest:

This ab workout is awesome! I am definitely feeling it today..
Our workout took roughly 45 minutes...

Yeah, so maybe this is not your idea of a party, but we had a great workout!

I have had a few questions about winter workouts, winter wear, and what to do during the cold weather, so some tips to come this week. Let me know if anyone has any requests, questions, comments, etc!  runstylerun@gmail.com

P.S. In case people don't know what WOD means "workout of the day" I will use this a lot for future reference.

Endurance Training

McCall and I went running tonight. We decided to do a shorter run because it was quite cold out.
41 degrees...
Cold hands, numb toes, eyes watering but honestly, I felt really good! We ran 2.13 miles at an 8:55 pace. My first mile I went 8:15 but then slowed down a bit during the next 1.13 miles.
Of course had to share a photo from our run...Despite the cold, it is still so beautiful out.

I feel my endurance getting better. McCall and I have been doing endurance training throughout the week that I know has helped.

Here are 5 of my favorite endurance training exercises:
1. Running stairs: its brutal! We have been running 2 along with a distance run. We're working up to more!
2. 100 yard sprints: I have realized over time that holy cow, those muscles need to be build up again because every time I do sprints I feel the tightness and then get sore the next day from it.
3. Jump rope: Go for 2-5 minutes straight without stopping as jumping as fast as you can. Count your jumps if that helps. When you get good at this, try double jumps.
4. Jumping jacks: Keep your arms mostly straight as you go up and back down, or try punching along with the jumps, it gives you a good arm workout!
5. Box Jumps: Be careful with these ones. You don't want to fall on your face. Practice with a shorter box starting out and as you get better you can get higher. I like to do a ladder with these. so do 15-12-10-8 or if thats too much go 10-8-6-4. Give a good minute to a minute and a half rest in between.

Always remember to watch your heart rate. You don't want to over do it!

Does anyone have some good endurance training exercises to share? If so, I always love new ideas!!

P.S. Got a new hat today. C/O McCall for my Birthday :)

I'm obsessed. I have been wanting a floppy hat EXACTLY like this!

Patience and an Imagination

Sweater- Thrifted   White under tank- Ross   Jeans- H&M   Loafers- Thrifted   Watch- DKNY  Trench-Thrifted  Ring- Thrifted
This sweater was that sweater that I looked at on the hanger and thought..."Hmmm, maybe?" It's a sweater most people would overlook but I decided to give it a chance. And I decided, I love it and can't wait to wear it all through the Fall and Winter. Plus, it's vintage and it was $4. If I could give you one work of advice about thrifting it's this. Don't overlook things. Go in with a lot of patience and a little bit of an imagination.  At the same time, don't buy something you don't love. I have bought a few things at thrift stores thinking I could maybe make it work...and NO, sometimes they're meant to stay at the thrift store. Other times, you have a new found treasure that no one else will EVER have. Thats my favorite part! I have to tell you about these loafers as well...but another time...

I gotta get back to watching Vampire Diaries! hehe..

Dreamy

Button down- H&M   Sweater-Borrowed from McCall (Diesel)   Jeans- Nordstrom Rack    Mocs- Minnatonka

I didn't get a work out in yesterday or today! Unless you count a few exercises with patients at work, hours of homework, or chasing nephews all weekend....besides the homework, those are the best kinds of workouts!! hehe...

My brother and sister-in-law were talking about Vampire Diaries today, they love it, and I have never seen it so they lent me the first season. I've watched a couple episodes and I must say...pretty good! Anyone a fan?? Personally, I think Stefan is dreamy! I'd pick him over Damon for sure! I like more the quiet confident type than the cocky outwardly overly confident type....haha...Who's your favorite?

Superman

Top- Thrifted   Pants- Forever 21   Mocs- Minnatonka   Sunnies- AE
McCall and I went running last night.

Technically it was my off day but we decided to take advantage of the nice evening. We ran a short run and did some endurance exercises. Here's what we did....

We ran 2.5 miles at a 9:14 pace
Then did 4 rounds of this:
20 lunges
20 side together side steps
20 skips forward
20 seconds running backwards

Next was plank for 1 minute adding on 30 seconds of twists by hovering one knee at a time over the ground. Of course always keeping our abs and back as straight as a board.
Last we did Superman. This is a good one for that back fat that likes to hang over your jeans. Starting out, do just one arm one leg opposites (left arm right leg) pulse without touching the ground then switch to the other side. To finish off do all four (as seen in picture) We did 25 pulses each with a hold of about 15 seconds after each one. Hopefully this one will get us closer to being strong like Superman. Wouldn't that be cool??

Honestly we only worked at the most 45 minutes. We used our time effectively and got a good workout!! Anyone have some favorite ab workouts they like to do? How about running drills?

This Sweater

Jeans- H&M   Sweater- Thrifted   Cargo Jacket- TJ Maxx  Socks- Kohls   Boots- Hunter   Sunnies- AE

I found this sweater when my sister in law and I went thrifting for $5. Honestly, I would wear it every day if I could. So comfy and warm.
It was quite windy today. On top of that, it rained almost all day! Around 5pm it cleared up and besides the wind was really nice out! We captured a bit of the sun...I was glad to spend a little time with my nephew Preston as well...

Later I ran 3 miles.

The wind added to some good resistance and I ran some small hills. I am feeling a little stiff from yesterdays run but overall I felt really good! My phone died on me around 2.5 miles so my music became the sound of my shoes crunching on the leaves below me. I want to hold on to the days of Fall as long as I can.

Run for Life

Week 1 day 1:
Tonight I went running with my friend Ashley. My plan today was to run 3 miles (as seen on my running schedule) We headed to the the falls (hense the name Idaho Falls) Around the whole river its 2.5 miles. We didn't want to have to overlap so we ran to a park nearby. Doing that added around 2 more miles.  So we ran roughly 4.5 miles. The reason I say roughly is because my GPS on my phone somehow paused and so it didn't record all of my run so we had to kinda guess how far we went. I didn't mind....it was a gorgeous night... 65 degrees...It was a bit more windy than I would have liked but I can't complain. Here are a few pictures I snapped....

A restaurant I have never been to!

Because I'm pretty much starting out, I took my sweet time.
My minutes per mile (MPM) was around ten minutes.
I prefer to wear leggings while running when its cooler (of course shorts rule out everything  and I had been wishing that I wore some) The leggings I chose to wear tonight drove me crazy. they kept slipping down and so I'd have to stop to pull them up. I definitely need to put workout leggings on my shopping list. Any suggestions? My shoes were rubbing a bit as well. I haven't bought a new pair since I've been home so I know that mine are well past their mileage limit. Dang it...
I know I need to work on my breathing because there were a couple times I had to stop so I wouldn't throw up. Anyone have advice for when this happens?

A few funny moments:
Playing hopscotch through duck poop.
Lady stopping me (mind you had my head phones in and a determined runners face) to ask me where the Shilo Inn was. For some reason I totally spaced it and said, "you know, I think its somewhere around here." Then went on my merry little way thinking, "Brandi, you dummy, you know where that is." So...I turned back around, went back to the lady, and kindly gave her directions.
A dog decided to glare its teeth at me and then proceed to enter my bubble zone. I did a bit of jogging backwards during that time until the kind owner decided to finally grab the little stinker.
My attempts at capturing pictures.
Ashley's text (she ran ahead of me sadly to admit) "Are you ok?" I finished and proceeded to tell her all of my excuses adventurous experiences during my run.

Overall, I can't wait for the first week to be over. It's like the first week of a new job. It's just so much better when you are more comfortable and feel like you're doing well. Don't get me wrong though...I enjoyed my run tonight immensely!

20 Week Running Schedule

When I first started this blog, my intentions were to focus more on running and I haven't done much of that. I have found that I run every now and then but nothing like in the past. You see...  I spent a year and half serving a mission for the LDS church in Brazil and I've now been home 2 years. It was the best time of my life. Seriously, I miss it every day and loved my time there! When it came to exercise though,  we were alloted 30 minutes in the morning and where I served we WALKED everywhere. It was physically demanding in different ways. I would jog in the mornings and do a few arm and leg exercises. But knowing we'd be walking for the next 10 hours as well made me not want to push myself too hard as to not get so exhausted I couldn't move (which still happened sometimes haha)  So when I got home, I wasn't in bad shape but I wasn't in the shape I had been in before my mission and ever since then I just haven't tried to get back to where I was. I have decided to finally start training again and I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with all of you!! I have come up with a 20 week running program to work up to a half marathon. This program is great for those who are just beginning runners to those who are runners but just want some more structure in their workouts. Also...if you feel like "there is no way I can run 3 miles tomorrow" start smaller. You can make your schedule to fit you better. start with one. The important thing is that you're starting! So, I have found that with my training, I honestly don't want to run any more than 12 miles. Its just not fun to me! haha. But I never ran more than 13 miles training for my marathons and I always did great! Maybe not as fast as some may want, but I enjoyed my training and still felt great at the finish line. So this schedule that I have made is preparation for a half marathon. I haven't signed up for any races yet, but my goal is to work on this schedule and then in 5 months when I get done with it, I will make some new goals and consider what race I would like to do. Depending on how I am feeling and doing, I may even look into another marathon! I just want to have fun getting back into shape and have that love for running that I've always had grow.
So...here it is!!

Week one starts tomorrow. I have printed out this schedule and put it on the wall. I will mark off each day I accomplish. I have given myself 2-3  rests days depending on the week in which I will either rest or do some cross training. Sundays I will take completely off.

I have also made myself a "Workout Journal" to record each day I work out, what I do, where I went, how far I ran, how I felt, who I worked out with, and any goals I want to make to do better.
I would be interested to know if anyone wants to do this training with me!! I'm really feeling motivated and excited. If you are..I just have 3 tips that I know are important before we start:

1-Make sure you have a good pair of shoes. My favorites are Asics Gel Kayano. Good shoes are so important. I work in therapy and I can't even tell you how many patients we have come in with bad knees that were runners and they say they had always wished they had had better shoes and taken better care as they run.  When I first started getting into long distance running, I was losing toe nails and getting so many blisters. I started doing research and I kept finding everyone saying how important a good pair of shoes is. I also read that getting them a little bigger was recommended to give room for swelling. I have gotten a 1/2 size larger, some even say to get a whole size larger. Wow, it sure made a difference. My feet weren't my holding me back like they were!  I know they do shoe fittings too so that might even be good if you're not sure what shoes to get yet.
2-Stay hydrated. Make sure you're drinking enough water to make up for any water you may lose from running.
3-Have fun. Getting in shape is fun!  Honestly, I love a good run to look around at the beautiful earth that the Lord created for us that we may not see otherwise! If you start getting bored, you've got to change things up a bit. Keep checking back here, I will try to post new ideas and fun things we can do to liven up our workouts a bit.

Thats about it for today. I don't want to do too much in one day! Happy training! I would love ideas, advice, likes, dislikes, do's, don'ts, opinions, and motivation as I'm starting so feel free to email me runstylerun@gmail.com or message me anytime!
